Today We Discussed:
Daisy Disk
The first app I would like to discuss today is called DaisyDisk, which is an app used to meter how much disk space you have used and what exactly is using it, so that you can better utilize your hard drive. Fortunately for me, I have a 500-gigabyte hard drive which is only about half-full right now, but I wanted to try out DaisyDisk for myself anyway. On launch, it gave me a list of all disks on my MacBook Pro, and I chose my Macintosh HD. From there, even though I had over 250 gigabytes of data on my drive, it did the scan in well under 10 minutes, so I was thoroughly impressed. It then displayed a colorful graph of exactly what was on my disk, and it told me in what folders all of my files were located and how much space they took up. Clicking on any portion of the graph goes into much more detail, creating a new graph for more detailed analysis. The whole graph has a circular interface, which takes a little bit of getting used to, but works really well for browsing through your files in an intuitive way once you get to know the app. Mainly the fact of just how fast this application runs compared to other ones is what makes it good, and what makes it worth the $19.95 U.S. for a downloaded version, with an extra $14.95 added for a delivered CD-ROM. It is a great application overall, and I recommend that you check it out at its website and pick up a copy for yourself.
Way Back Machine
The other thing I wanted to discuss today is not really an app, but more of a website, called the Way Back Machine. I still cannot find exactly what purpose this site serves, but it is indeed cool to use. The Way Back Machine allows users to visit its site and view what nearly all websites looked like all the way back to their inception. For example, I could look at Google from the late 1990′s, or I could look at MacMania from 2007 (I know, pretty embarrassing, right)? Anyway, it is a really cool tool to see what sites looked like in the past, so I recommend that you check it out.
